LBGE Welcomes Susan Fehlinger!

Susan Fehlinger’s paintings depict familiar, yet abstracted settings or themes that compliment most interiors. Her painting style emphasizes an interest in texture and color; and she thickly applies neutral or earth tones with a palette knife to highlight structure, form and shadow. The artist says, “I love playing with color, the shapes and shadows and the freedom of working on large canvases with oil paint and palette knife….” Her compositions play with scale, placement and negative and positive spaces, creating visual interest and an individual sense of light and space.

LBGE Welcomes Michael Hartwig

Inspired by the art, architecture, and artists of Italy, while studying in Rome oil painter Michael J. Hartwig says he felt “a deep urge to find a way to capture the feeling and experience of those places in pigment and canvas.” Hartwig creates restful compositions of Southern Europe as well as the northeast coast of the United States. Whether painting ancient ruins, sleepy harbors, sun-soaked vineyards, breezy beach dunes, or snowy cityscapes, Hartwig captures the essence of each locale, paying particular care to replicate the natural lighting. Hartwig’s aesthetic style features soft contours, cool palettes, and subtle brushwork. Considering the tranquility of his paintings, Hartwig describes his work as “ethereal” and “meditative.”

Newport resident, Matthew Cohen is a professional sailor as well as an award winning and internationally recognized nautical/adventure photographer. His subjects include sky, sea, coastline, and sailing vessels. Taking photographs from helicopters and the tops of masts, Cohen uses Canon professional lenses and digital cameras to capture the beauty and ingenuity of sailing vessels. He frequently takes his photographs from extreme angles and uncommon vantage points, abstracting and aestheticizing his subject. As a result, the photographs of common nautical subjects, such as bows, masts, jibes, and rigging, ultimately take on a unique and extraordinary presence.

Manchester, Connecticut resident Doug AmEnde creates acrylic paintings depicting idyllic New England landscapes. His paintings include scenes of vast cloudy skies, shady forests, flower-filled meadows, pristine beaches, and ponds covered by water lilies. Although AmEnde selects traditional subjects, his techniques are not. He frequently inserts abstract elements in his compositions and employs a unique approach to manipulating paint and producing texture. Each painting is characterized by vibrant, saturated colors and expressive mark-making. Considering the evolution of his work, AmEnde describes his current artistic style to be “a looser, more expressive interpretation of the world around us, using light, shadow, and a unique method of blending color and texture to convey the varied moods of the seasons of New England.” As an artist, AmEnde emphasizes the importance of close observation, particularly of fleeting moments, which he captures in his paintings. The complexity and sophistication of his paintings reflect his dedication to and life-long passion for fine art. AmEnde’s artwork can be found in private collections throughout the United States and abroad.

Susan Roberts is a jeweller who draws on the many inspiring qualities of nature’s evolving beauty; and handcrafts her jewelry using a style that is both bohemian and sophisticated. Susan’s multi-layered, color-rich pieces are made with the finest semi-precious stones, freshwater pearls, sterling silver and vermeil; and will compliment the palettes of all jewelry collectors. Susan Roberts resides in Branford, CT.

Heather Wang is a designer inspired by natural forms and floral elements. Her latest collection features colorful enamel cherry blossoms and branches in sterling silver or copper. Combining vibrant color with delicate designs, Heather’s jewelry is fun and easy-to-wear from day into night. Heather Wang has a BFA in Jewelry and Metalsmithing from Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA in Goldsmithing, Silversmithing and Metalwork from the Royal College of Art, London. She is currently based in Lowell, MA.

Linda Sherman is a watercolorist and jewelry maker, who creates bright light-weight artisan jewelry from her original watercolor paintings. Using clusters of watercolor beads and handmade lampwork beads, each piece of Linda Sherman jewelry is a unique work of art. Linda is currently based in New London, CT.

Left Bank Gallery Essex, LLC presents a solo exhibition by young contemporary oil painter, Samantha French. “Open Swim” will feature French’s latest paintings, depicting bathing beauties and submerged swimmers, and the water and refractive light surrounding them. French’s paintings elucidate the tranquillity and serenity of water, and the intrinsic value of a dip in the pool or a day at the beach.

Based on the artist’s childhood memories of summers spent at the lakes in northern Minnesota, her newest paintings capture pool-side conversations or tanned women surfacing for sunlight and air. French’s most intriguing canvases portray swimming figures from below or from the side, and capture light and reflections on top of or entering the water. She uses gestural brush strokes and fresh color choices, and thoughtfully crops her compositions to emphasize the space beyond the picture plane. As her figures float or glide through lakes and swimming pools, each swimmer is immersed in the moment and caught in solitude, liberated from the constraints of gravity. With figures dressed in retro swimwear, often in red, orange or black, contrasted against cool greys or aqua blues; French’s paintings blur the line between vintage and modern, creating a nostalgic place or time that seems familiar yet current. Of her work, French explains, “I am drawn to an idealistic time before my own, where swim caps and wool swimsuits were commonplace. This combination of memory, observation and photography (old and new) has allowed me to preserve the transitory qualities of water and remembrance.” French’s paintings will breathe new life into any interior, and invite one to pause for a moment of calm and clarity even on the cloudiest of days.

Samantha French was born and raised in north central Minnesota and graduated from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design with a BA in Fine Arts in 2005. She currently resides in New York City. Her work can be found in private collections throughout the country. “Open Swim” is French’s first solo exhibition in Connecticut.

Acrylic Painting Workshop with Donna Zieky

For beginning artists or creative individuals looking to learn more about art, artist Donna Zieky will lead a fun and informative no-pressure painting workshop at Left Bank Gallery Essex on Saturday, April 16th from 2-4pm. This creative workshop will cover basic acrylic painting techniques and applications, and will offer insight into the medium that will open your eyes to a broad range of possibilities. Learn tips and pointers about painting, including form, composition and color in order to express your creativity. Guided by the artist, attendees will explore the potential of acrylic painting and create their own masterpieces to take home and show-off to friends and family.

Donna Zieky is a resident of East Hampton, CT. Her artwork ranges from exciting landscapes to brilliantly colored abstracts done in oils or acrylics. Her florals and landscapes originate from her love of nature, gardening and the outdoors. She is inspired by Connecticut’s varied geography, stating that, “It is so wonderful to have such beauty in your own backyard.” Imagination, innovation, and creativity are the driving forces behind her fun and vibrant work. Donna is excited by color, movement and texture, and strives to imbue in her paintings, a feeling of overall happiness and joyous emotion. Donna Zieky’s artwork has been exhibited in many juried shows in Essex, Lyme, West Hartford and Glastonbury. She is an elected member of Essex Art Association; and won an award from EAA for Best Technique in 2009. In 2007, she won First Place for a painting at the Glastonbury on the Green Art Show. Zieky is a member of many artist leagues and associations throughout the state and exhibits her work at Left Bank Gallery Essex.

Aleta will demonstrate a variety of color mixing methods in watercolor and acrylic. Attendees will mix paint to explore hue, value, intensity and temperature. Whether you paint landscapes, still lifes, or portraits, this informative lesson will teach you how to master warm and cool primaries, neutral and chromatic greys, and flesh tones in order to create sophisticated and rich palettes. The workshop will cover color relativity and optical color mixing. Learn how the Impressionists juxtaposed color to create stunning optical effects. Utilize the color wheel to maximize the visual impact of your paintings by selecting the perfect color scheme to suit your compositions. Uncover strategies to brighten up your canvas and avoid mixing “mud”.

Aleta Gudelski is a resident of Durham, CT. She holds a BS in Art Education from Southern Connecticut State University, a MALS from Wesleyan University, and a Post-Baccalaureate degree from Lyme Academy of Fine Arts. She has taught painting, drawing, and design at secondary and college levels for several years. Her artwork has been included in juried group shows and gallery exhibitions throughout Connecticut. Highlights from our 2010 Workshop!

Left Bank Gallery Essex, LLC will host its third annual Valentine Workshop with collage artist, Patrice Nelson on Saturday, February 5th from 2-4pm. Guided by the artist, children and the young at heart are invited to use paint, glitter, ephemera, and imagination to create wonderful greeting cards for parents, teachers, friends and their sweet hearts. Spend the afternoon learning how to design fun and fantastic collages and test the limits of your creativity.

Patrice Nelson was born in California and raised in Texas and Minnesota and spent several years on the West Coast before settling in Chester, CT with her loving husband and four beautiful children. As an artist, Patrice is always exploring and experimenting with texture, color, and surface; and putting to use her extensive collection of found objects and vintage clippings. She enjoys the process of creating her distinctive collages, and loves every minute of gathering, painting, and “tearin’ it up.” The artist says, “It pleases me to put a smile on someone’s face with my work.” Join Patrice during this free public event to create your own loving artwork and darling valentines.

Encaustic is a beeswax-based paint mixed with pigment and kept molten while painting. The word encaustic comes from the Greek meaning to "burn in" which refers to the process of fusing the paint. This type of painting was used in the 5th century B.C. for weathering boats and coloring marble. Encaustic is the most durable of the artist's paints because the beeswax is impervious to moisture. As a result, it will not deteriorate, yellow or darken and it can be polished to a high gloss for a brilliant surface. The beauty and the difficultly in the paint is found in its immediate drying time. Because it cools immediately, the gesture and brush strokes are captured. "Encaustic" was first made popular in the contemporary art world by the famous, American, pop artist, Jasper Johns.

Left Bank Gallery Essex, LLC presents “Shape/Space : New Work by Lois Weingarten” featuring a series of womanly figures and urban environments derived from the artist’s imagination and her exaggerated memories of reality. This new exhibition includes a selection of paintings and works on paper that articulate Weingarten’s gestural and graphic painting style. The artist’s interest lays in the creation of shapes and spaces via her use and application of bold color, thick line, and a loose and organic sense of movement. Weingarten’s exhibition will inspire interest in both her subject matter and her technique. The artist says that she interprets, “the interplay of line, shape and space,” in order to create, “depth, motion, mood, and illusion.”

Sunday, October 17th turned out to be an unforgettable event as illustrator Rolandas Kiaulevicius performed scenes from his children's book "Zoolidays" dressed as his favorite character Blue Moose and led a drawing demonstration for all in attendance - children and adults too. Kiaulevicius's exhibition "Milkin' It" features thirteen new watercolors of cows in various guises, and three others from his recent book. Come by the gallery to view his work and his whimsical sense of humor. "Milkin' It" is on view through November 14th.

LBGE welcomes Noel Coonce Ewing

Noel Coonce-Ewing is an assemblage artist specializing in Steampunk art. Using found-objects, antique ephemera or modern components, Noel stylistically re-imagines and re-invents technical imagery and mechanical aesthetics from the industrial past. Noel creates shadow boxes along with small sculptural pieces made with vintage musical instrument boxes, fruit crates or plinths and adds to them carious found, re-purposed or handmade objects. Her work combines contrasting textures and surfaces, such as work or aged wood with smooth porcelain or oxidized metal. She describes her creative process as eliciting the same excitement as finding broken objects at an archaeological dig and piecing them back together to discover and rediscover history. Imagination and creativity reign in a new children's illustration exhibition inspired by the fun and fantastic mind of Rolandas Kiaulevicius, on show at LBGE from Oct 14 - Nov 15th. The artist will read from his recently published book, "Zoolidays", and will demonstrate his cartoon-style illustrations at an opening reception and activities workshop on Sunday, october 17th from 2-4pm. Families and children of all ages are invtied to attend.

Born in Lithuania, illustrator, author, folk dancer and fashion designer, Rolandas Kiaulevicius travelled the world before immigrating to the United States in 2001 to further his education and passion for art. Kiaulevicius has a BFA in Art Education from Pedagogical University, Lithuania and an MFA in Illustration from Western Connecticut State University. He currently teaches at Eastern Connecticut State University, New Haven University, Guilford Art Center and Tabor Art School and continues to create paintings, drawings, photography, and sculpture. Kiaulevicius says, "Art for me is a powerful and mysterious companion." His recent exhibition will focus on the theme of cartoon animals and music, with vibrant color, pattern and humor in mind.

Robert Noreika is a graduate of Paier School of Art and has been a professional artist for 35 years. His paintings hang in corporate and private collections throughout the world, as well as the New Britain Museum of American Art. He is a memner of numerous art associations, including the Connecticut Plein Air Painters Society, Lyme Art Association and the New England Watercolor Society. Noreika's passion for art is matched by a natural talent to pain a wide variety of subjects, from expansive coastlines to intimate woodland pastorals.

Patricia Louise Corbett joins LBGE

LBGE is proud to add Patricia Louise Corbett to its roster of artists. Patricia Corbett was born and educated in Los Angles, CA and is the eldest of thirteen children. In college, she studied both art and music, and went on to sing professionally. Her singing career spanned over 40 years in concert, opera and television and allowed her to travel throughout the world. In 1997, after a bout with cancer, Corbett returned to art. Corbett has recieved numerous awards for her work. She is member of the Connecticut Plein Air Painters Society, Lyme Art Association, Mystic Arts Center, among others. A selection of work inspired by the historic and picturesque Merritt Parkway are now on view and available for sale at LBGE.

Julie McMahon Borge joins LBGE!

Now on view at LBGE is new work by oil painter Julie McMahon Borge. Originally from Western, MA Borge now resides in Buck's County, PA with her husband and three children. Borge has painted and created all of her life. Her formal education includes a BA in English and Art History from Boston College and an BFA in Painting from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. In 1995, a benign brain tumor caused Borge to lose the sight in her right eye and forced her to take a break from painting until recently. She returned to painting with a developed, loose and minimal style. She is able to create representational forms with limited and edited strokes, highlighting her mastery of oil and palette knife.

"White on White - The Connecticut River Museum"

As part of his current exhibition at LBGE, "The Essence of Essex", Louis Guarnaccia painted a striking scene of the Connecticut River Musem and the Mary E. Last night, a fire at the museum damaged the third floor of the building - thankfully no museum pieces were destroyed, though conservation work is necessary to combat smoke damage. Crews are working away as we speak - and the museum director hopes to re-open soon.

Artist and Essex resident, Pam Carlson, will set up her easel to paint a series of beautiful hydrangeas. Carlson specialized in painting animals of Connecticut farms and barnyards. Her subjects include chickens, cows, sheep and most recently swans on the Connecticut River. Carlson majored in Fine Art and Education and worked in commercial art before becoming an art teacher. Inspired by nature and faith, Maria Joseph Nace, will describe the art and poetry featured in her book, Poet with a Brush. Nace is a Sister of Providence of Holyoke, MA. She currently teaches at Baypath College and the Elms Colle. She exhibits her work throughout New England and has published poetry for over 30 years. Maura Cochran joins LBGE

Maura Cochran holds a BFA in Architecture from the Art Institute of Chicago, but her artistic training began as a child, watching and learning from her mother who worked as a full time artist. Maura has two careers - as a CEO of a national real estate consulting company and as an artist. The consulting allows her to travel - and she always carries a sketch book in her briefcase. Maura paints only from direct observation. Living in the Connecticut River Valley is a great source of inspiration, and when not travelling she and her husband can be found cruising the river on their classic wooden picnic boat "Oyster".

Ted Mikulski - Art Car

LBGE artist and abstract painter, Ted Mikulski, came by last week with some new work for our gallery walls. He arrived in style - showing off his newly finished Art Car inspired by BMW examples by artists such as Andy Warhol, David Hockney and most recently Jeff Koons. Damien Hirst just finished his Audi Art Car for Elton John's charity. But, we think Ted Mikulski knocks out his predecessors and fellow artists (of course).

Completed in 11 days, Ted transformed his silver Nissan 350z into a high-speed graphic feast to the eyes. Drawn free-hand with black paint markers, Ted's Art Car includes familiar icons such as Pac Man and Where's Waldo and plenty of graffiti and stylized geometric patterns.

Horowitz's keen observation of nature and sensitivity to the environment combined with his expert handling and expressive technique imbue in his paintings the essence and richness of the American landscape. Though Horowitz is often cited as a realist, his paintings are not merely representational - he manages to capture things which are unseen: atmosphere, emotion, sense of place.

During the month of May, left Bank Gallery Essex will hold a solo exhibition for experienced plein air painter Chris Karpinski. "Blue Sky" will be on view from May 1st - May 31st 2010 featuring over 30 paintings ranging in scale and price point.

The artist's work surrounds the theme of luminous skies and serene landscapes conveying atmosphere, space, and eternal expanses. Voluminous clouds, clear blue skies, or diffused sunsets dominate the canvas, often grounded by thin streaks of distant horizon.

The artist's aim is to share her experiences and love of the outdoors and to uplift the viewer:

"The landscape is a sensual feast. Painting outdoors helps me to explore this experience, and to record it for my own and others enjoyment. If the light, color and atmosphere of my paintings stimulate the viewer's memory of a time and place - a peacful retreat, then I have accomplished all I could have hoped for."

Karpinski is an award winning artist. Her work has been shown throughout the United States, Ireland, and the United Kingdom. Karpinksi is an alumus of Rhode Island School of Design and the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts.

Paul Batch: Fleeting Light

During the month of April, Left Bank Gallery Essex is honored to feature the work of young Connecticut artist Paul Batch. Batch creates traditional landscape paintings in oil, poetically capturing the fleeting and ephemeral light cast by the passing sun or rising moon. The artist focuses on transition, painting times of day or changing weather conditions and their dramatic effects upon the natural and uninhabited landscape. Batch says he is, "drawn to the beauty of transitional moments in time....twilight, a passing storm, the moon rising. The beauty comes in part from our awareness that these moments of transition are fleeting." Batch is an elected member of the Connecticut Academy of Fine Art and has won numerous awards inculding a Gold Medal from the Connecticut Plein Air Society.

Larry Horowitz, an important and internationally collected artist, will be featured in a solo show for the month of July at Left Bank Essex. We are currently exhibiting 6 of his new works to provide our clients "a taste" of Larry's breathtaking work before this summer. We had the great pleasure of visiting Larry and his family at his studio and home outside on NYC yesterday. While in his studio, surrounded by works of all sizes and colors I felt like a kid in a candy store. Saturated colors, captured moments of fleeting light, the relationship of water and sky...I was in heaven. Larry can transport the viewer right into the painting and I left yearning for the Cape, beach, sunsets and the magic of summer. He paints all over, literally from coast to coast, and in all seasons. The paintings selected to show in Essex are mostly of the east coast in summer. Is there any other place to be in the summer?

FORM AND SPACE: WORKS BY MICHELE DANGELO
During the month of February, the Left Bank Gallery Essex will feature the work of painter Michele Dangelo. Dangelo’s work is both evocative and atmospheric, eliciting an emotional response from the viewer without creating any sense of narrative. Dangelo focuses on ordinary objects – houses, dresses, boats – and places them within a landscape devoid of place and time. Highlighting form, space, color, and texture, the seemingly simple objects are placed skillfully on the canvas elevating them to iconic status. The artist’s handling and mark making enhance the complexity of her use of color and contrast. Dangelo’s imagery creates a sense of calm, reserved energy and isolation whist also stimulating the viewer to recall memories or dreamscapes. Dangelo says that she is, “challenged by the notions of free expression and a distinct hand to create work that has more to do with the viewer’s perception than my intention.” An Artist Reception will be held Saturday, February 13th from 4-6pm.

Greetings! Well, here we are, just over the thresh hold of 2010. Everyone at LBGE greets the new year with the anticipation of lots of wonderful things to come in the world of art and beyond. Laurie & Rob McGinley are now the "sole-owners" of LBGE, as Corinne has moved on to pursue other interests. While we wish her well, we fully expect that this change will streamline our communications and processes at the gallery. We are excited, thrilled or shall we say "over the moon" to announce that we have a full-time Gallery Director and her name is Amanda Bahram. Amanda is incredibly insightful about visual arts, witty, creative and organized- a real asset to our gallery and to all of our amazing artists and clients. Amanda worked at LBGE part time when we first opened and has since become a happily married lady...Congratulations to you Amanda, and welcome!!!

The 2010 calendar for LBGE is impressive and our featured artists will delight both our clients and community. At current, Iconic Obsessions by Karl Soderlund is the featured exhibition. The show consists of BIG portraits of icons of the silver screen, science and music. BIG does not just describe the size of these works (over 7 feet high) but also the impact, detail and quality. I have always been inspired by the landscape around me. My paintings are about those incredible colors that pop up quickly in New England. I paint what I see on a daily basis. Painting expressively allows me to gather a rythm when I paint that often surprises me with the results. The unexpected appearance of color depending on what is going on around it really excites me. My goal is for my paintings to attract the viewer from afar and then keep them interested close up, just as nature does. I absolutely love what I do and try to keep in energetic and fun. I studied painting at Skidmore College including a year abroad at S.A.C.I. in Florence, Italy.

A Bit About the Artists:

C.R. Bryant: If your interests involve coastal art - Marine art - classic sailing yachts -historical Marine art or portraits and figurative paintings of life on or near the sea, we encourage you follow C.R. Bryant. He is actively involved in fundraising opportunities using his Marine art to support historical Marine tradition and preservation of classic yachts.

Louis Guarnaccia: As a young man he also studied under master artists Dean Keller, Ken Davies, and Rudolph Zallinger at the Paier College of Art in Hamden, CT. After art school, Louis continued painting both landscapes and portraits, in addition to working as an illustrator, art director, and creative director at various advertising agencies in New England.

Russ Kramer: His unique vision creates first-hand experiences for the viewer, putting you right on board during some of history’s greatest races. A sense of the dramatic moment, combined with meticulous research and attention to detail, have found wide appeal. Self-taught, he is thrilled by his early success, and is committed to learning as much as possible and becoming as good as he can be in his newest –- and final – career, as a marine artist.

Jeffrey Sabol: From an early age, he was fascinated by the ever-changing reflections of the boats at anchor in the harbor. This fascination is translated by his unique interpretation of line and shadow which appear almost abstract in his startingly realistic work. His paintings are an exercise in tranquility and gentle motion, as they study the lightness of line.

With a successful career in the digital arts, Jamie brings from the West Coast a bright fresh perspective on those beloved creatures we call dogs…Animals, especially dogs, are loving creatures that present unconditional love to their masters. In an age of online dating, shopping and bill paying there is a growing disconnectedness in the world. People don’t interact as much with people as they do computers. And yet there is a yearning for connection. My work presents the larger than life panting, smiling, grinning and loyal companion that never disappoints us. Dogs in particular are heroes because on some level they save us. Their soulful eyes reach out of the canvas and catch their viewer’s eyes. There is love and connection through a giant canine’s eyes. Enjoy!

ABOUT JAMIE SPOONER:
My development as a painter comes from over twenty years as an Illustrator, Graphic Designer, Art Director, Creative Director and business owner for a Technology and Marketing company. Planeteria, Inc. produces corporate identity and Web site solutions for large and small organizations across the United States.After graduating from Smith College with a B.A. in Studio Art, I taught Art and Photography in Switzerland. In 1994 I moved into a digital world with my creative skills. I relocated to Seattle and designed the second Web site for Microsoft Corporation. As a Lead Design Program Manager at Microsoft I designed the Web site for Windows 98 as well as another thirty or more sites for Microsoft.
My roots are in Essex, Connecticut.
My great grandfather is Judge Thomas Coulter who resided on Main Street in Essex from the late 1800s to 1952. Judge Coulter was town clerk and judge of probate until 1952. My parents have been married 56 years and still live in the same family home, now in the family 120 years. When I was 6 years old I started drawings animals and selling them on Main Street. Although I majored in Studio Art I took a commercial route and recently have returned to illustration through acrylic painting. I started painting in acrylic and latex 3 years ago. Painting is a passion for me, as it is for my mother and sisters alike.
I also have a deep love of animals and people. My work reflects my ongoing interest in people, animals and the psychology and play between them.
My inspiration for composition comes loosely from pop artists like Warhol and Liechtenstein who presented reality in a bold way with vibrant colors. I generally paint oversized canvases with larger than life figures of people and animals. I turn these subjects into caricatures. In the animal-related themes, my animals are typically lovers and heroes and in the people-related themes my people are typically flawed, human and real.

Jamie’s work is tinged with humor and fun. She says, “I paint big and I paint with bold colors to make a statement. It is about connection and in some cases lack of connection. I also love painting people and animals as subjects because they have so much life, personality and soul. Every person is different and every dog has its own day. In the last 10 years I’ve rescued two dogs from the Humane Society. For any painting sold in 2008, I will donate 10% of the profit to the Humane Society of Sonoma County. A Czech artist now residing between Waterford and Prague, was born to a Russian mother and Czech father. Her childhood was marked by flights to Moscow to visit her maternal grandmother, a famous actress from Stanislavsky's legendary theater. Though they were cautious not to flaunt their Russian in public, her and her mother, Lena, always felt most at home in their mother tongue. But in Prague the atmosphere was icy. Vaclav Havel was still musing a long way from his presidency of the 90's, and Katia's father's artistic genius was gaining him no friends in the communist ranks. He was a political, satirical cartoonist who was more than once prohibited from working and forced to live off the small income of Lena's translations alone. Some of the most progressive minds in the country would congregate in Katia's childhood home, well aware of the bugs planted in the walls by the secret police, and aware of a privacy relegated solely to thoughts expressed below a whisper amongst themselves, or through the most cunning means (Such as through children's cartoons, which her father also became famous for). These comrades would later become Havel's minister of foreign affairs, another the prime minister, and her father was honored by the president himself as a foremost prominent figure of Czech culture. These were the environs which molded Katia's artistic ambitions and memories. She studied Philosophy and linguistics at Prague's Charles University and Universita per Stranieri, Perugia, Italy and later with the great Boris Jirku, then Professor at the Praque's prestigious Art Conservatory. The meditative, trance-like state from which her work comes is the birth ground of epiphany itself and Katia brings forth her visions of a world even more secretive and unknown than those magical streets of her Prague childhood.

It was a tough job, but somehow we narrowed it down to four artists from our gallery to recieve the first annual LBGE Awards of Honor. These four amazing individuals were selected based on thier talent, enthusiasm, consistancy of sales and support of gallery functions and community outreach projects. These artists came through for us during our first 8 months...and we wanted to say Thank You. With the help of Bill Duncan, Andrea Wiley, Patrice Nelson and Jeffrey Sabol we have begun to achieve our goal of expanding the artistic footprint of art on the Connecticut shoreline.
